The Naked Truth Is, We're Used To Public Nudity

New Zappos.com ads use nudity as a humorous -- as opposed to sexy -- way to sell its clothing.
I was laughing over the clever and quirky new ads for Zappos.com -- the ones that feature seemingly nude models jogging, hailing a cab and riding a motor bike -- when I realized something:

Nudity isn't shocking or surprising or passion-provoking anymore.

It's no big deal.

Or, as Michael Bernacchi, a University of Detroit Mercy professor and marketing expert, said: "Nudity is tired."

Naked Gardener Given Suspended Jail Sentence After Complaints By Neighbours

An 80-year-old naturist appeared in court yesterday accused of indecent exposure – after washing his car on his driveway in nothing but a blue hat.

Kevin Lavelle, of Heald Green, Manchester, upset his neighbours by gardening in the nude. But the final straw was when he began parading about in front of his home, Stockport magistrates heard.

He got an eight-week suspended sentence after admitting three charges of indecent exposure.

Naked Gardener, 80, Who Wore Nothing But A Hat

An elderly naturist shocked his neighbours by gardening naked – and even cleaning his house guttering and changing a car wheel with nothing on.

Kevin Lavelle, 80, was hauled before magistrates after long-suffering residents compiled a dossier of evidence against him.

His victims, many of them elderly, told how his antics left them upset and extremely distressed. Lavelle was reported to police last month after neighbours saw him gardening in the front garden of his bungalow wearing nothing but a blue hat...

Mystery Of Nude Pair Who Braved Floods To Push Car

These two cheeky motorists appeared to take the term flash flooding literally as they rescued their stricken vehicle from the water.

The daring duo were pictured by stunned passers-by after they stripped off entirely to avoid soaking their clothes as they attempted to push their Ford people carrier at around 3pm on Friday on Mayfield Road, Liberton.

The pair were captured in the act by insurer Stephen Loy, who was taking pictures of flood damage at the scene...

Nudity on stage – but how about off?

A 'clothing-optional' performance in Toronto suggests theatres should reach out to non-traditional audiences – naturists included

You've probably heard this piece of advice dished out to a nervous performer before: to relax, picture the audience naked. Last week, however, actors Maev Beaty and Erin Shields went one step further – and actually performed in front of a naked audience. In what may be a theatrical first, they held a special clothing-optional performance of their play Montparnasse at Toronto's Theatre Passe Muraille... Read More.

Shark Naked!

A hundred and fifty people visited a Cornish Aquarium naked this week to promote Naturism.

The event at Blue Reef in Newquay, part of Nudefest 2011, was one of the largest ever nude group visits to a UK aquarium.

Naturists will be attending organised events right across the county all this week.

Hundreds of committed nudists are staying at a North Coast campsite who’ve extended their holiday time for 2011.

British Naturism’s Commercial Manager Andrew Welch said: “Nudefest is a well-established and hugely popular event in the naturist calendar... Read More.

Can people unlearn their naked shame?

Once we were all happy to walk around naked, now we're not. But can an experiment in nudity help us understand why we are so embarrassed by being seen in the buff and help shed our inhibitions?

It's a classic anxiety nightmare - you're standing in front of a room full of work colleagues, your boss is there, maybe even that new colleague you've been trying to impress. And you're stark naked. Ouch.

Why are we so ashamed of being seen naked? Is there something deep in human nature that finds naked skin abhorrent? Some prudishness inherited from our Victorian ancestors?... Read More.

Nakedness: the photographer that breaks taboo

Photographer Spencer Tunick, known for his works featuring large numbers of nude people, says he's always investigating the vulnerability of the body in the contemporary concrete world. Video uploaded 17 August 2009.

Naked Britain

L_NakedBritain-ep3
This three part series [made in 2009] follows Dr Jack Lewis as he travels the breath and length of Britain to see if Blighty really is as prudish and squeamish as our stuffy-nosed international reputation suggests.

That isn't to say Dr Jack is a bastion of hippy, free-loving, 'get-your-kit-off' exhibitionism though and he's forced to not only attempt to make the great British public open up about their bodies, but confront his own prejudices along the way.

This light-hearted, highly amusing series sees Dr Jack explore the world of naturism, the relationship between nudity and art, and the seemingly geneological nationalistic inherency of finding everything nudey very very naughty.

As Jack himself says: “Nudity is such a complex subject. When you’re a kid, you have no inhibitions, but then puberty happens and the shyness kicks in. Britain also makes an unwavering connection between nudity and sex. Scandinavian countries are more open-minded, and are able to separate non-sexual nudity from the sexual. The British can’t, it’s the Victorian hangover.”

EastEnders nudity sparks fury among viewers

A naked bedroom scene featuring EastEnders' Christian Clarke and Syed Masood has sparked fury among viewers.

The gay couple - played by actors John Partridge and Marc Elliott - were seen kissing and cuddling in bed more than an hour-and-a-half before the 9pm watershed.

With children left "confused" by the scenes, angry parents are now demanding the BBC One soap puts warnings at the start of such episodes in the future.

One parent said: "I was left having to explain all this to two young kids. One of them even thinks he's gay now because he kisses his dad."

Writing on the BBC's online message board, another viewer vented: "I'm not a homophobe but really do not want t see gay men in bed naked and kissing.

"Especially whole my 10-year-old daughter is sitting with me before the watershed."

Despite the anger sparked by the scenes among a number of viewers, the broadcaster has also received 77 messages from fans of the BBC One soap praising the plot.

A spokesperson told the Daily Star newspaper: "We cannot discriminate by treating gay characters any differently to other people in the programme."

Nudity in Pride

Pride
Back in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City, a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations against a police raid took place.

They are frequently cited as the first instance in history when the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender) community fought back against a government-sponsored system that persecuted sexual minorities, and they have become the defining event that marked the start of the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world. The riots were an in-your-face protest caused by the harassment from police and government. They falsely thought the general population supported their crackdowns against the homosexual population. The riots proved them wrong. The LGBT community took to the streets standing proud of who they were. Drag Queens went out in drag.  Gay men and women flaunted their sexuality for all to see because they had had enough – We're here! We're queer! Get used to it!

Move on to February 5, 1981. 150 police officers raided four gay bathhouses in Toronto. One was so badly damaged in the raid that it never reopened. Police denied the excessive force but reporters that visited the scene proved them wrong. Nicknamed Operation Soap, the raid resulted in the arrests of 268 men. The response from the gay and lesbian community was immediate and angry. Over 3,000 people gathered in protest.

A second demonstration which took place on February 20, included over 4,000 people who gathered at Queen's Park and marched to Metro Toronto Police's 52 Division, the division responsible for the raid. Born out of these police raids was the Toronto Pride Parade. This is the reason the parade is like it is. A protest parade for the same reasons as those born out of Stonewall. The parade is supposed to be about overt expression of homosexual sexuality in all its forms because you, the general citizen, through your government, wanted a crackdown against all things gay. This of course was wrong, and it backfired on the government and police of the day. The general population did not support these crackdowns or the discrimination against the LGBT community... London Fashion Week Embraces Naturist Fashion!

Usually London Fashion Week is about showing off designers' new clothing lines but Charlie Le Mindu broke tradition by making his models strut down the catwalk completely naked.

Granted, the daring designer’s collection was a range of wigs so clothing wasn’t essential, but not even the most glamorous of hats and exquisite wigs could take the attention away from the nipples – and much, much more – on show.

The French 24-year-old is known for causing controversy though. His creations have graced the heads of Lady Gaga, to say the least.

As if walking down the aisle stark naked wouldn’t draw enough attention to his ladies, he put them in bright pink platform boots, hats, bags and the all-important wigs.

But this isn’t the first time the adventurous designer has caused a stir in the fashion world.

Last year – when he first appeared on the scene - he showed off a zany creation of a face headdress made of real rat and mice carcasses.

Le Mindu studied hairdressing at Vidal Sassoon and Tony & Guy before he started creating his unique wigs. He now works in London’s trendy Shoreditch.
