Wisdom: Andrew Zuckerman

A bunch of pictures and banners are in the Alan Lambert Galleria at Brookfield Place from July 11 to August 5, 2011 - the works are a collection of large format photographs titled Wisdom: Andrew Zuckerman and also features quotes from "leaders and visionaries from the world of politics, science, sports, and the arts."
See more wisdom after the jump.

Don't take yourself seriously.
When you teach you learn.

The Brookfield website has this to say about the exhibition.

WISDOM: Portraits by Andrew Zuckerman

Brookfield Place will host the Canadian premiere exhibit of ‘WISDOM’, an extraordinary collection of photographs and interviews that capture the combined wisdom of legendary leaders and celebrities including Nelson Mandela, Ted Kennedy, Willie Nelson, Billie Jean King, Check Close and others. Visitors can walk amongst the 50 large format photographs and view quotes in which the subjects share lessons learned from a lifetime of work in such diverse fields as politics, sports, science, art, film, architecture and music. The exhibit is part of a project conceived and created by award-winning photographer and filmmaker Andrew Zuckerman, who was inspired by the idea that one of the greatest gifts a generation can give to the next is the wisdom gained from experience. The project was produced in cooperation with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who is also one of the subjects in the exhibit. Zuckerman met with his subjects in the summer of 2007, traveling with his creative team to four continents to interview and photograph fifty luminaries from all walks of life. All of the portraits are shot against the same blank white backdrop, allowing each face to tell its own story.

Wherever you are, be there.
Nobody can teach me who I am.

800 Nude Pillow Fighters Play at Gaasbeek Castle in Belgium

800 men and women in Belgium shed their clothes to fight with pillows at Gaasbeek Castle, 6 miles south of the capital Brussels.  The volunteers posed for the latest nude photo installation by daring U.S. artist Spencer Tunick.  The piece, entitled "Sleeping Beauties" was shot entirely on the grounds of the castle and is the latest in Tunick's expansive portfolio.

Here's a look at "Sleeping Beauties"

Tunick, who specializes in nude outdoor photography, is known for gathering large crowds of naked models in public spaces.  His largest project had 18,000 people posing in Mexico City's main square, Zocalo.

FEEL the love: Distillery District

Yes, FEEL the love at Toronto's Historic Distillery District. Just be careful of what you are feeling. There is a large FEEL under the legs of the creepy, one eyed spider sculpture. When you go to look at it, maybe give it a feel, the spider reaches down and eats you. Check this post for more freaky sculptures.
The bricks among the district change as more things are being reconstructed and condos continue to rise in the neighbourhood. Still, there are many things that happen in the area. The TD Toronto Jazz Festival continues until Sunday, July 3, 2011. Last weekend there was also the MEC Bikefest getting all spokey in the streets of brick.

Silver Elvis on black velvet

Silver Elvis was on station outside the Eaton Centre, shaking the pelvis and being all reflecty. At the same time - the same time I say, there was an artist painting Silver Elvis on a what could only resemble black velvet (I don't know if this is the artist of the famous dogs playing poker painting) using Silver Elvis' silver guitar - the paintbrush was attached to the end of the guitar.

V is for ....

Well, a lot of good things, but in this case it is the shape of a V shaped sculpture, with a ball in the middle. I am not kidding. This is a sculpture located at Leader Lane and Front Street at Vagabondo. The work is titled U.V. Ceti by Andrew Posa.

Bollywood takes on the censors with explicit film

Asshole film
SHOULD Kaushik Mukherjee's film Asshole - with its full-frontal male and female nudity, expletive-laden dialogue, angry rap soundtrack and off-colour title - seem like a bold venture, wait for his next trick.

In two weeks, the Bengali darling of the international film festival circuit will return to his home town, Kolkata, to battle India's censors for the right to show his story of youthful malcontent in the nation's cinemas.

It's a timely challenge, given the Indian parliament is set to debate the 93-year-old Cinematograph Act in the monsoon session of parliament next month... Read More.

Nudity in religious art: fig leaf Vs full frontal

Religious Art Nudity
SALT LAKE CITY (RNS) The Rev. France Davis doesn't want any nude Adam-and-Eve figures at his Calvary Baptist Church -- even if they were painted by the famed Michelangelo himself.

Davis is unequivocal in his view that there is nothing inspiring or redeeming about naked figures in religious art.

"Since we sinned, as it said in the book of Genesis, the human body has certain parts that are private," the outspoken pastor said. "We should keep them for more intimate settings like people's bedrooms."

Davis is hardly alone in that view.

From the prudish impulses of the Counter-Reformation, to the Vatican's use of the fig leaf as a genital cover-up a century later, to modern Christians objecting to a nude Christ sculpted out of chocolate, there have always been those who wanted to see everything clothed.

Scores of believers oppose any nakedness in art as blasphemous -- even a glimpse of the Virgin Mary's breast as she nurses her baby son -- or akin to pornography.

For other Christians, though, the line between celebrating and eschewing artistic nudity is neither easy nor clear-cut... Read More.

Nudity on stage – but how about off?

A 'clothing-optional' performance in Toronto suggests theatres should reach out to non-traditional audiences – naturists included

You've probably heard this piece of advice dished out to a nervous performer before: to relax, picture the audience naked. Last week, however, actors Maev Beaty and Erin Shields went one step further – and actually performed in front of a naked audience. In what may be a theatrical first, they held a special clothing-optional performance of their play Montparnasse at Toronto's Theatre Passe Muraille... Read More.

Nakedness: the photographer that breaks taboo

For artist Joe Clarke, bare chests are a canvas and beauty is proudly skin deep

For artist Joe Clarke, bare chests are a canvas and beauty is proudly skin deep

Abstract artist Joe Clarke has a talent for painting naked women.

More specifically, he paints on them. Clarke is a body painter. He looks at a naked chest and sees a canvas.

Later this month, the Edmonton man will fly to Austria to compete at the World Bodypainting Festival , a huge annual event that showcases the best in the medium worldwide.

Clarke was killing some time online when he stumbled upon the festival site. He found the submissions page and decided on a whim to forward some photos and video of his work. The organizers responded, saying they'd be happy to have him. So Clarke will compete in the brush/sponge category at the festival... Read More.

Size matters in nudist portrait

BPportrait_415
A giant painting of a nudist beach on Corfu is thought to be the largest work ever shown at the BP Portrait Award.

Paul Beel, 30, spent a month capturing residents and holidaymakers at Mirtiotissa after his idea won the £5,000 BP Travel Award from the National Portrait Gallery. The American arrived last September to fulfil the commission at a resort he first visited 11 years earlier on honeymoon. His work, Epic Mirtiotissa, measures 61/2 feet by 171/2 feet... Read More.

Giant Toronto Inuksuk

This giant Toronto Inuksuk came together along Lake Shore Boulevard, just beside Ontario Place, in celebration of World Youth Day in 2002. The stone structure is a landmark made for various purposes and has come to symbolize the vast northern territories of Canada and it's peoples that live in the harsh lands.

I post the photo in celebration of our friend Goretti Kakuktinniq from Rankin Inlet. Goretti works with the Nunavut Development Corporation (NDC) and she recently went to Paris to promote Inuit art.

Luminato 2011 - Art under construction

Hey, good art takes time, great art is timeless and big art takes a lot of work to hang. The Luminato 2011 art installation 'Sargasso' is currently being  put together in Brookfield Place. There is a lot of stuff hanging from the ceiling.

Luminato provides the following information regarding the art installation. "In his Luminato-commissioned installation, Philip Beesley’s Sargasso combines visionary design with high-tech digital engineering to transform a downtown public space – and to offer a glimpse of the potential future of architectural art. A worldwide pioneer in the fast-growing field of responsive architecture, Beesley and his team of collaborators from the disciplines of architecture, engineering, biology, and sculpture use interactive technology to infuse one of Toronto’s busiest spaces with astonishing new life."
