Smoking in Bollywood

Every time Shah Rukh Khan lights up a cigarette on the silver screen or Rani Mukherji puffs away her woes as she did in No One Killed Jessica, there is a strong likelihood of an Indian teenager becoming a smoker.
This has been revealed in a new study published in Tobacco Control, an associated scientific publication of the British Medical Journal this week.
The chances of tobacco use initiation among schools kids who are highly exposed to smoking scenes in Bollywood movies are more than twice as compared with those with low exposure to such movies.
Tobacco use depends on several factors like presence of smokers in family, peer pressure and social environment, but smoking scenes in films appear to play a major role.
The study was conducted among 5,000 eighth and ninth graders in 12 government and private schools in Delhi.
Western studies have already established that exposure to smoking in Hollywood movies leads to increased risk of smoking among adolescents.
Preliminary research in India had suggested that tobacco marketing is associated with increased tobacco use, but this time impact of marketing strategies, such as promotion through Bollywood movies and distribution of tobacco- branded merchandise on youth, has been studied.

The film industry is opposed to a ban on smoking scenes in films on the grounds of creative freedom and has dragged the health ministry to court over this issue.
The ministry of information and broadcasting is batting for the film industry. A final word from the Supreme Court is awaited.
" Tobacco use by celebrities in movies is in violation of the Indian tobacco control law, which bans all forms of direct and indirect advertising," pointed out Dr Monika Arora, lead author of the study.
" Depiction of smoking and tobacco use in Indian films glamourises this behaviour for the young audience and they get an impression that smoking and tobacco use is a norm," she added.

The study also found that the tobacco industry was promoting various brands through merchandise products like caps, belts, T- shirts, posters, helmets and water bottles. Chewing tobacco products are also being promoted through kites. All this is in violation of the law.
It was found that students who owned or were willing to wear tobacco- branded merchandise had greater chances of becoming a tobacco users.
Almost 7 per cent of all adolescents in our study reported owning a tobacco promotional item, which suggests that tobacco companies are violating Section 5 of the Indian tobacco control law. This calls for stricter implementation of rules, researchers said.

Her latest shoot for FHM magazine sees her doing the topless bikini briefs-routine, albeit with an Ajanta-Ellora twist. Not that she's new to the bare-all drill, it's the way she presents herself in this particular picture that catches one's interest immediately.

It's the marrying of the conservative with the outrageous that stamps a lasting impression. A bikini somehow can't send the same signal of shock as a traditional, virginal piece of clothing can. Much like Sila Sahin who sent a clear and deliberate message to her conservative Turkish family. It was not so much the exposed breast, but the conservatively draped loin cloth that makes the picture even more outrageous. It's like she's playing with tradition itself, using it to mask and reveal what she likes. The picture is creating quite an uproar in the West and not because it's unlike a regular Playboy cover in terms of nudity, but because of what's being played with.


There's a sense of risk and rebellion in a picture with a traditional piece of clothing that is usually used to cover up than reveal, which does not exist in wearing a swimsuit. A swimsuit only reveals a very fit and toned body, but a picture which has a conservative piece of clothing or accessorising shows a certain aspect of the subject's personality.

Following the magazine hitting the stands, Sila Sahin quickly gave quotes about how liberating it was. According to her the picture rid her off many years of suppression in a conservative environment. Mallika Sherawat, too, talks about her Haryana roots in the interview accompanying this picture. Nudity when combined with traditional items of dressing up like a bindi or bangles turns into something more than just great vital stats. It's about making a point, pushing the boundaries. It's not only about a gym-toned body anymore.

WHERE THE LINES BLUR

Take pop icon Lady Gaga for instance. For someone who has worn everything from metal to meat on her ever frail body, it was her slutty nun outfit that created mass controversy. Her version of the nun's habit for one of her performances on stage peeved many people; not for what she showed but what she covered the rest of it with.


Though religion is a far more tricky and delicate territory than tradition, but the underlying idea of shock — by marrying the conservative with the outrageous   remains the same.

It might be a first for Mallika Sherawat, but actress Vidya Balan has already mastered the art of 'aesthetic nudity'. According to her, sensuality that has an Indian touch to it is much more tasteful and powerful.

Movie censor / Telugu movie rating / Telugu movies

It's not there in the hall of fame, look for it in the hall of shame and Tollywood is there occupying the centrestage.
The Telugu film industry, which boasts of producing the second most number of films in the country, has earned the dubious distinction of being on the top in trying to peddle obscenity, vulgarity and violence in films.

The scissors of the censors, however, have often cut the dreams of filmmakers short by insisting on deleting all objectionable scenes.

In terms of length, for the year 2008 a total of 8,073.68 metres of film had to be cut by filmmakers as the censors found it objectionable. Compare this figure to Bollywood's movies and the length advised to be cut was only 1,825.66 metres.
















Similarly, for the year 2009 also (the latest year for which detailed statistics are available), the Telugu film industry showed its ability to outclass other language films. A total of 4,761.20 metres of film had to be cut in the Telugu movies censored at the Hyderabad regional office as against 2,472.63 metres which suffered the censors cut in the Mumbai regional office.

" Nenu Na Rakshasi  film's censor was completedand got an 'A' certificate for its content. Puri Jagannath described the genre of the film as film noir and said that a film of this kind has never come on Telugu screens. Lets wait and see if the audience too feel the same."

The audio has already received positive notes. The first copy of the film is ready with clean 'U' certificate."

"Junior NTR and Ileana starrer 'Shakti'' has been re-censored following reports of insult to national flag.However, censor officials informed that it is Italian national flag which resembles Indian flag which is on the shoe of NTR that made them re-censor the movie."

During 2008, as against 286 Telugu films released, 248 Hindi films were released. However, during 2009, while 235 Hindi films were released, 218 Telugu films hit the theatres.

Telugu filmmakers have shown an obsession for obscenity, even if they know it may not get past the censors. "The obscene stuff is shot anyway hoping that the film gets a clearance with all that," says a film analyst.

"After we watch the film, we have a sitting with the film producer and the director and advise them about the cuts to be made. They do give their point of view, but the CBFC follows strict guidelines in not passing what is objectionable," said CBFC regional officer A Dhanalakshmi.

Take for instance, the movie `Nenu Na Rakshasi' starring Rana Daggubati directed by Puri Jagannath which got released on April 29, 20011. Item bomb Mumaith Khan had to bear the brunt of the censors as they got the scenes in which her body exposure was considered vulgar in a cafe and on a flight. Some 25 feet of film had to be cut for this. The censors insisted that Mumaith Khan's exposure of her cleavage in a close-up shot in a song be deleted. This apart, vulgar words and abuses were got deleted by the censors.

In the movie `Lokame Koththaga' released on April 8, 2011, Jyothi's intimate love scenes with her boyfriend had to be sliced. To give more examples, in the film `Mantra' starring Charmee and directed by Tulasiram, the censors imposed as many as 10 cuts which meant 230ft of film had to be sliced and given an `A' certificate.

`Ala Na Pellanta' released in March this year starring Allari Naresh too suffered censor cuts for unnecessary exposure of the heroine in a bikini at a swimming pool.

It is only getting worse in Tollywood. In a recently released film, a filmmaker went to the extent of incorporating a dialogue which said `One plus one free' referring to a daughter and mother. Shocked censors naturally did not allow it to pass.


The Tamil film industry which encourages buxom beauties had also to suffer the brunt of the censors but this was to an extent of only 3,920.4 metres of length of film in the year 2009. The Kannada film industry was spared with 2,898.79 metres of cuts and Bengali films only 116.59 metres of cuts.

The secrecy laws that allow celebrities to hide their involvement in sex scandals took a major leap forward yesterday in a draconian decision by Appeal judges.
They ruled that a well-known married man working in the entertainment industry who had an affair with a colleague cannot be named – to protect his children from playground bullying.
Three judges led by Lord Justice Ward said the public had no right to know about the relationship, which led to the sacking of the man's married lover.




























And for the first time, Lord Justice Ward extended the reach of privacy law beyond what is published by newspapers or broadcasters to cover everyday office banter.
In remarks described by lawyers as  setting a 'dangerous precedent', he said people were entitled to expect colleagues who notice their sexual affairs or hear  gossip about them to keep it quiet.
This suggests that ordinary people sharing office banter are at risk of falling foul of the expanding net of judge-made privacy law.



One critical MP said if the rules set down by the judges applied across the legal system, nobody would be able to name even murderers if they claimed their notoriety would embarrass their children. The landmark judgment came in the case of a father of two, an entertainment industry figure referred to in court only as ETK, who had a six-month sexual relationship with his colleague.
He ended the relationship after his wife discovered it and then told his bosses that he would prefer not to see his mistress again, and one of them should leave their job.





























His lover was said in the judgment to have been 'upset and angry' after she was sacked several months later.
The Appeal Court judges ruled that under privacy laws the figure must be protected from public exposure by a newspaper which planned to report details of the affair and its aftermath.

And they added that the man's name should be kept secret to spare his children 'the ordeal of playground ridicule'.
Yesterday's injunction is the latest in a string of controversial privacy orders being used to hide the involvement of the rich and famous in sex scandals.
In the past week alone, one injunction shielded the name of a Premier League footballer who allegedly cheated on his wife in a six-month fling with topless model Imogen Thomas, and another covered up the name of a leading actor, also married, who is said to have slept with Helen Wood, a prostitute once used by Wayne Rooney.























Privacy law, developed by judges over the past few years, has never been approved by Parliament.
It means that, for the first time in more than 100 years, newspapers, broadcasters and individuals are forbidden by law from telling the truth about people.

Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming, who has launched an inquiry into the proliferation of privacy rules, said the doctrine that children must be shielded from playground bullying could be used to prevent publicity about serious criminals.
'The trial of a murderer could be declared secret on the grounds his children might  suffer,' he said.
'I find it strange that an employer who takes such a  discriminatory view of how employees may be treated  cannot be named,' Mr Hemming added.
'Privacy law is growing and growing and growing. There seems to be no structure to it at all.'

Senior libel lawyer Niri Shan, of the Taylor Wessing firm, added: 'If work colleagues are no longer allowed to speak about what they observe, then this sets a dangerous precedent.'

Zoa Morani is the daughter of producer Karim Morani of 'Raja Hindustani' fame. She was discovered by non other than SRK who is launching her alongside three other newcomers in Roshan Abbas directed 'Always Kabhi Kabhi'. Zoa too was an assistant director in Rajkumar Santoshi's 'Halla Bol' and Farah Khan's 'Om Shanti Om'.
She will debut in Roshan Abbas' maiden directorial venture Always Kabhi Kabhi later this year.

Zoa won't have a big bash this year. She said, "I just want to chill with my family and go out for dinner with them."


Morani, an Ismaili by birth, added, "I will definitely pray at the Jamatkhana (community centre)."

What makes this birthday extra special is that her boyfriend Shamik Raja will be in town. "He surprised me by flying down from London. He had told me he wasn't going to be able to make it," she gushes.

She met her guy, an Indo-Canadian, two years ago on her father's birthday. According to a source, Shamik manages a hedge fund and has a house next to Shah Rukh Khan's in Dubai.

On screen, the newbie would love to romance Hrithik Roshan. "He is so hot," she said.
