How many hotels can claim "excellence since 1228"? Ashford Castle can -- though I'm not sure what passed for luxury in the 13th century. Flash forward to today: The landmark castle-turned-hotel in western Ireland is offering a package with a free night starting at $1,149 for a three-night stay.

The deal: Ashford Castle in Cong, County Mayo, was indeed built as a castle, but then it was rebuilt as a hunting and fishing lodge in the 1800s, according to the hotel's website. It location, 300 acres on the Cong River and the banks of Lough Corrib, means you can go fishing and boating without having to go far afield.

The 8th Century 3rd Night Free Celebration, as the deal is called (eighth century, as in almost 800 years old), requires two adults to stay at least two consecutive nights to score the free night. The package includes a deluxe room with breakfast starting at about $1,144 (or 800 euros) for three nights. Cancellations can be made up to seven days before the schedule,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
