When the locals turn out for Egypt’s camel races, no one asks: Will that be one hump or two?

Susie, Fred and Alice are hump-free, much to the chagrin of jockey Elizabeth Neufeld.

“The best part is the humps,” the 8-year-old grumbles good-naturedly, trying to keep from sliding off her smooth-backed mount. “I rode a camel at Toronto Zoo and they’re better because they’re bumpier.”

But no one’s claiming the beasts of burden barrelling around the course at last weekend’s fifth annual Great Camel Race are the spitting image of their Cairo counterparts.

“We don’t permit spitting,” laughs racing veteran Nick Galgay. “This is just for fun.”

Which is what the hilltop hamlet south of Sutton is all about.
