Taste for technology
Could you believe that technology would offer such an interactive experience with your taste buds? It definitely does at restaurants like Koh at Mumbai's The InterContinental, Escobar and Royal China and Delhi's Setz and FU-Better than China who have now sexed up their menus with iPads. Offering a visual tour of the dishes with pictures, wine pairings and snippets about ingredients, they enhance customer experience and tempt them to try new dishes.

Touché in Bangalore has gone a step forward in the digital world with its ultra futuristic touchscreen floors that light up with dazzling graphics at every step and tables with touch-sensitive menu cards, music requests, games, lighting and billing services and more. A must try!

Bonding over bread and banter
Community tables are the latest rage where diners can share a big, common table and whip up interesting conversations. Le Pain Quotidien in Mumbai, the global bakery chain has a communal table where the concept is that fresh bread tastes best when shared with friends. While the Table (also in Mumbai), a fine dining restaurant has one that resembles a long, running bar counter - the perfect se(a)tting for chatting up good looking strangers!

One two many
Hip singles can now hang out at special singles' bars and restaurants like Elbo Room, Mumbai's first legit single's bar where you can meet, talk, laugh, discuss and have fun galore with someone you haven't met before.

Or even Mingle at Kino 108, Mumbai which holds special quiz nights in a perfect setting. The whole idea of the concept is to meet new people and make new friends who share a common interest - quizzing. Everyone will be assigned a team, so please don't expect to be sitting with the gang you came with. Instead if single, mingle as much as possible. The prospect of meeting cute geeks with a high IQ is very high here!

Get ready for heady concoctions
Run of the mill cocktails are passé in these times of bacon-flavoured martinis and jalapeno margueritas. Restaurants are mixing up a lipsmacking storm of handmade liqueurs and cocktails that use everything from seasonal fruits, vegetables and flowers like marigold to spices like pepper, fennel and even shrimps and curry leaves.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

‘I rescued my husband from dacoits’/Bemore.femina

I rescued my husband from dacoits "My husband Ajit Singh is a professor at Dehradun College and he often has to travel for work. In August 2010 he had gone to a local college in Agra to check answer sheets. On August 5, he called me just before he left Agra for Dehradun, as was his habit, and said that he would be back soon. He was coming home after almost 11 days and I was excited about his return."

"However, my husband did not return that day or the day after. I tried calling him on his cellphone but it was switched off. I started to feel anxious. After all, Ajit was not the sort of person who would change his plans suddenly without informing me or switch off his cellphone without reason. My mind was filled with misgiving and I began to wonder if he had met with an accident or whether he was in some sort of trouble. I didn't know what to do, so I informed the local police, and kept vigil, hoping that he would walk through the front door at any moment and end this nightmare."

The ransom call
"After a sleepless night, at about 7.30 am the next day (August 7), the phone rang. It was Ajit. Relief washed over me when I heard his voice. But not for long, because Ajit wasn't telling me that he had been delayed. He was saying that he had been kidnapped and that I should arrange for money immediately. At first, I thought he was joking. This was unbelievable. Why on earth would anybody kidnap Ajit? We were not from a rich business family with tons of money to cough up as ransom."

"Almost immediately, however, the phone was snatched away from Ajit and I heard an alien voice asking me to arrange '50 lakh. The sum was absurd. I told the voice on the phone that we were middle-class people and there was no way that I would ever be able to arrange so much money. Then the man reduced the amount to '10 lakh. Even this was too much, but I didn't want Ajit to be harmed so I told him I would get what I could. He then instructed me to come to Dhaulpur in Rajasthan, which is about 55 km from Agra, and said that further instructions would be given once I reached the spot."

"I was numb with shock, but I knew that I had to act fast. So I collected my senses, arranged for about '50,000 in cash, took whatever little jewellery I had and left Dehradun with my kids."

"My first stop was a relative's house in Greater Noida. I dropped off my kids there, convinced my brother to come along with me and left for Dhaulpur on Sunday morning (August 8), not knowing whether I would see my babies again. Once we reached Dhaulpur, I was instructed by the kidnappers, with whom I was in touch over the phone, to wait for a car to pick me up to take me to an undisclosed destination."

1. Hot trend: Smokey hot
Inspiration: Jennifer Lopez, Megan Fox, Bipasha Basu
Intensifying your eyes is a sure shot way to look gorgeous. "To attain this look, keep everything understated, including your outfit and makeup," recommends Stafford Braganza, Head Makeup artist, Lancome.

Get the look
Take a smokey eye shadow in black or brown and craft those peepers using an eye base brush, starting at the lash line and continuing upward toward the eye socket. Next, take a black eye pencil to the lash line and draw outward, towards the temple and end in a pointed tip. Now, draw over this shape and deepen with the pencil. Add layers of mascara and then rim the inside of the eyelid, top and bottom. Keep the lips muted as the focus stays on the eyes. Ensure the makeup is waterproof so you can dance the night away at the baraat.

2. Hot trend: 'Less is more'
Inspiration: Deepika Padukone, Hilary Swank
What ruled the red carpet this Oscars is the understated, refined look! "You too can sizzle in the drizzle with this look as long as your motto is 'less is more'," asserts Stafford.

Get the look
Use a concealer in yellow or pale. Dodge the foundation and prepare the base of your makeup using tinted moisturisers or a light-powder. Get the air-kissing-lips with a sheer gloss in pastel shades and use a beige or light pink eye shadow and a dash of blush on your cheeks. Finish it with a thin eye-liner on the upper and lower eyelids, ditch the mascara. To put this look together during monsoons, use only mineral makeup, waterproof kohl, transfer-resistant lipsticks and waterproof liners.

3. Hot trend: Sea-salt-kissed hair
Inspiration: Selena Gomez, Kareena Kapoor
Quite on track with messy hairdos, this trend has stormed the carpet. "It's more like the 'day after' hair," says celebrity stylist Prashant Patil.

Get the look
To add this sort of rough texture to your hair, use a sea salt spray-in after your hair is styled. Spray onto hair and scrunch to bring out your natural waves. Set your tresses free and enjoy the monsoon wedding.

4. Hot trend: Knotted notes
Inspiration: Natalie Portman, Anne Hathway
Pinning back a torrent of unruly curls into a top-knot, the celebrities are sporting this chic hair trend everywhere.

Get the look
Spray your brush with a bit of hairspray before you use it to back comb your hair. Put your hair into a high ponytail at the top of your head. "Tong your hair to get curls," suggest Prashant. Now, wrap your ponytail around the band and secure with bobby pins. Set the knot by spraying hairspray liberally. What's better? The splashes of rain can do them no harm.

How date-worthy are you?

How date-worthy are you?

Travel ling heavy
The first dates are always about frivolous fun! So for starters, if you are into a new relationship, getting all soppy and talking about your ex, gives an impression that you are still into them. "Nobody likes to be the rebound partner, as it's the worst way to start a new relation," recommends Dr Anjali Chhabria, Consultant and psychiatrist, Mind Temple. So, drop the emotional baggage in the flanking bin and move on.

Instant revelations
Do you like to reveal all on the first date itself? Men like women with a dash of mystery. The more mysterious you are, the more your partner would like to know about you. If you tell all on the first date itself, the thrill and excitement of knowing you more goes missing and so does his incentive of meeting you next.

Cribbing non-stop
Your opinions on world issues are impressive but if you are a perennial ranter about everything, right from your job to your life to the weather, and that too on your first date, it is a big turn-off. "No one likes to be around people if they crib non-stop about everything and everybody," says Dr Chhabria. Learn to look at the brighter side of things and you will attract people.

A clinging vine
Are you giving signals on the first date itself that you're desperately looking for an emotional anchor? Well, don't as he may read it and feel too weighed down. "Men today prefer women who are independent and if you appear to be too clingy or needy, either emotionally or otherwise, he is most likely to give you a skip," recommends Dr Rashmi Joshi, Counselling Psychologist and Clinical Hypnotherapist, Psychological Aura.

Nosy overdrive
Getting to know the person on your first date is important. But throwing in a million of questions is an invasion of privacy. It projects you as the irritating, prying kinds and can make your date feel really uncomfortable. As the adage goes, only fools rush in, so take your time and your partner will talk about it sooner or later.

"It is essential that you assess and check on these vital key aspects to ascertain your psychological wellbeing, from time to time," suggests Dr Rashmi. After all, the health of your relationship will depend on the wellbeing of your mind.

V. Gangadhar

The world's last typewriter factory closed down in Mumbai this April. V. Gangadhar pays tribute to the typewriter, his companion throughout his journalistic career.

The media reported the closure of the last typewriter factory in the world, Godrej and Boyce in Shirwal near Pune though it turned out nearly 10,000 machines till 14 months ago. Ask any journalist or typist, he could narrate dozens of stories about his “best professional friend”. That is why it is surprising that not a single village in my home town, Palakkad, named any of its villages after Christopher Scholes, who in 1868, patented the first typewriter. Five years later Remington Arms Co., Pennsylvania, began manufacturing the machine and there was no looking back.

Never ending streams of SSLC passed boys, Ambi, Naanu, Subbudu, Pichandi and the rest of the gang joined Shorthand and Typewriting Institutes, passed their “Lower” and “Higher” examinations and took off to Mumbai. When they returned on leave, they were a changed lot, smoking outside their homes and boasting about making it out with short-skirted girls. The typewriter impact had begun.

A place at home

My life was different because I went to college. But there was a “Royal” brand typewriter at home which my father occasionally used the Biblical system, “Seek and Thou shalt find”! I fiddled with it off and on but my real involvement with typewriters began only with my first job in an Ahmedabad textile mill where the typing pool was full of Palakadu boys. My work in the Purchase Section consisted of writing official letters to various suppliers and soon I found typing easier than writing by hand. The work was cleaner and there was no interruption to the flow of thoughts Thanks to my Typing Pool friends, I came to know a lot about typewriters. We had Remington, Godrej, Halda, Underwood and other brands and each typist had his favourite which he fought to retain. And why not? Ernest Hemingway did most of his work on a “Royal Deluxe” machine, while P.G. Wodehouse relied on a “Monarch” Exceptions to the rule included John Steinbeck, who used lead pencils, 60 a day. When the edges of the hexagonal pencils hurt the fingers he switched over to round-shaped pencils. Steinbeck no doubt won the Literature “Nobel” but did not know what he had missed out on typewriters.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Salsa is a type of Latin American dance that involves footwork coordinated in time to jazz and drum beats.

Until a decade ago, if you were to ask anyone about “Salsa”, they would have thought you were talking about the spicy Spanish tomato-based puree that goes with nachos.

But recently, the dance form, Salsa, which has nothing to do with its homonym, has become increasingly popular, not only in the western hemisphere, but throughout Asian countries as well.

“But it is important to keep in mind that salsa is under a category called ‘social dances', that is, dances that take place with a partner,” says Ms. Kokila, who has been teaching salsa since 2000.

Success of Salsa

Many patrons and fans of Salsa operate under the misconception that Salsa can be traced back to Spanish roots, but this is ncorrect. Salsa dancing arose out of Cuba, due to a mixture of West-African and native Latin American influences. The dance continued to have great success in the north American countries, because of its catchy jazz beats, rhythmic footwork and easy-to-learn steps.

A Chennai-ite who took up learning the dance at the Russian Cultural Centre, Chennai, says, “Yes, it was a fun class. There were people of all ages dancing, and it's not difficult to learn at all, especially when compared to other dance forms.”

Styles and Steps

There are many different varieties of Salsa that exist today, each having a unique name that either specifies the geographic location it originated from or the name of the dancer who was the first to popularise it. Each of these individual styles has a distinct characteristic, whether it be a more complex beat to follow or a twist in the basic footwork.

Small steps

The basics comprise small steps taken first by the right foot, then the left, and accompanied by a slight swaying movement of the hips.

Sheela Ram, who has done a course on Salsa dancing, says, “You can do it to any song, basically. When I was doing the course, they had general Salsa music playing all the time. All you had to do was step to the beat.”

As she so aptly stated, ‘stepping to the beat' is considered to be the trickiest part of mastering this dance.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

The Pentagon has confirmed that a cyber attack against computer networks in the United States could prompt a retaliatory military strike.

"It would be irresponsible, and a failure of the Defense Department's mission, to leave the nation vulnerable to a known threat," Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn explained during a recent briefing about the DoD's new cyber strategy.

Pentagon: Cyber attack could prompt military strike"[As such], the United States reserves the right, under the laws of armed conflict, to respond to serious cyber attacks with a proportional and justified military response at the time and place of our choosing."

However, Lynn said the DoD's cyber strategy ultimately emphasized "denying the benefit of [an] attack."

"If an attack will not have its intended effect, those who wish us harm will have less reason to target us in the first place," Lynn said.

He noted that any response to a cyber offensive would be "dictated by the effect," rather than location.

Are we alone in the universe? Russian scientists don’t think so.

According to The Guardian, one group of Russian scientists thinks humanity will make first contact within the next couple of decades.

"The genesis of life is as inevitable as the formation of atoms ... Life exists on other planets and we will find it within 20 years," said Andrei Finkelstein, director of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Applied Astronomy Institute, according to the Interfax news agency.

While speaking at a world forum about the search for life on other planets, Finkelstein said 10% of the planets circling suns in the galaxy are similar to Earth.

He also said that if water can be found on other planets then life can be found there as well. He thinks that aliens would be very much like humans with two arms, two legs and a head. He doesn’t have any comment about how many eyes we might be dealing with.

"They may have different color skin, but even we have that," he said.

Finkelstein’s institute runs a program that was launched in the 1960’s at the height of the cold war paranoia/space race to look for and send out signals to outer space.

"The whole time we have been searching for extraterrestrial civilizations, we have mainly been waiting for messages from space and not the other way," he said.

In March a NASA scientist caused controversy when he claimed that he found remnants of alien bugs in some meteorites that came to earth.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Heat from Earth's formation still being pumped out | TG Daily

Around half the 44 trillion watts of heat that flows from the interior of the Earth is the remaining heat from the planet's creation.

By capturing what have been called geoneutrinos – more precisely, geo-antineutrinos – emitted when radioactive isotopes decay - scientists at the KamLAND collaboration in Japan have precisely calculated the amount of heat generated by radioactive decay.

They've found that radioactive decay supplies only about half the Earth's heat, with the rest coming from primordial heat left over from the planet's formation.

The current most popular model of the inner Earth, known as bulk silicate Earth (BSE) assumes that all the heat from radioactive decay comes from the crust and mantle – about eight terawatts from uranium 238, another eight from thorium 232, and four from potassium 40.

KamLAND detected 841 candidate antineutrino events between March 2002 and November 2009, of which about 730 were reactor events or other background. The rest, though, were from radioactive decays of uranium and thorium in the Earth.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Harbhajan sues Mallya's UB Spirits over ad featuring Dhoni - Hindustan Times

Harbhajan sues Mallya's UB Spirits over ad featuring Dhoni - Hindustan Times

Spinner Harbhajan Singh's legal team has served a legal notice on Vijay Mallya's UB Spirits over a commercial for McDowell's No. 1 Platinum featuring Dhoni. The commercial shows Dhoni making fun of Harbhajan's role in a commercial for rival Pernod Ricard's Royal Stag. McDowell's No. 1
Platinum and Royal Stag are competing whiskey brands, coming in the same price band.

The notice says that such commericals cause disunity and friction within the Indian team.

For the first time, an Indian cricketer is mocking a team-mate in a TV commercial for a liquor brand. The ad goes like this... As a young boy, ace spinner Harbhajan Singh had the choice of churning out ball-bearings from his father’s workshop, but he chose to pursue his dreams and made it large in the cricketing world — that’s how Royal Stag puts it.

Touching, but McDowell’s is not happy. And so a spoof shows a teenaged Bhajji-lookalike accidentally creating humongous iron balls in a tryst to ‘make it large’ at the ball-bearings workshop! Even as the Bhajji-lookalike gets thrashed by his father, MS Dhoni comes, switches off the TV and says that it’s not about making large, but different.

Harbhajan's lawyers have demanded an unconditional apology along with the advertisenments being withdrawn immediately.

HAINES JUNCTION, YUKON TERRITORY — Our guide slams the hatchback of the mud-splattered SUV. With his hiking boot he nudges the backpack lying on the gravel.

“First-aid kit. Emergency flares. Mace. In case of grizzlies.” He hoists the pack onto his back.

For a walk in the park this promises to be no walk in the park. We are about to hike the Alsek Trail.

The landscape is devoid of humanity other than our guide, my wife and I, the battered SUV, and an overgrown logging road.

The Alsek, a designated Canadian Heritage River, meanders from Canada’s tallest mountains northwest of us, slicing through a U-shaped glacial valley, roaring through canyons kilometres downstream until it empties into the Pacific somewhere on the Alaska coast.

No walk in the park, but this is no ordinary park.

Kluane National Park and Reserve boasts Canada’s biggest mountains and the world’s biggest concentration of non-polar ice fields. It is home to moose, caribou, mountain goats, wolves and black bears.

And grizzlies.

By outdoorsmen standards this three-hour hike is admittedly small potatoes. The full trail can take four days. And the park’s other trails take even longer. But I am no big outdoorsman.

So I’m grateful for our guide. Nicknamed “Pokie,” he used to be a park warden, he knows grizzlies inside out, and for eight years he’s guided tenderfoots into a land that’s splendour is equalled only by its unforgiving nature,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

“You walked?”

“Alone?”

I travel with a small backpack, but it has come to be a metaphor for a philosophy of travel, an “ethos” if you like. When the locals turn out for Egypt’s camel races, no one asks: Will that be one hump or two?

Susie, Fred and Alice are hump-free, much to the chagrin of jockey Elizabeth Neufeld.

“The best part is the humps,” the 8-year-old grumbles good-naturedly, trying to keep from sliding off her smooth-backed mount. “I rode a camel at Toronto Zoo and they’re better because they’re bumpier.”

But no one’s claiming the beasts of burden barrelling around the course at last weekend’s fifth annual Great Camel Race are the spitting image of their Cairo counterparts.

“We don’t permit spitting,” laughs racing veteran Nick Galgay. “This is just for fun.”

Which is what the hilltop hamlet south of Sutton is all about.
