A lifetime in journalism has taught me that some interviews are best done over the phone. You ask a reluctant interviewee several leading questions, get the answers you want (probably in less than three sentences each), add your own ‘spin’, write up the interview in a few hundred words – job done.
I travelled all the way from Tamworth in Staffordshire to Totnes in Devon by train to interview Peter Thurley in person – and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
Motorcyclist, church organist, campaigner, retired chemist, lifelong naturist, secretary of British Naturism’s south-west region, BN’s representative on the Studland Beach Users Action Group; there are so many facets to this man that I could have happily interviewed him about every one of them separately and come up with a worthwhile and entertaining piece....
