When I mention to someone that I backpacked from Capetown to Cairo overland, they are often confused by what I mean.

“You walked?”

“Alone?”

I travel with a small backpack, but it has come to be a metaphor for a philosophy of travel, an “ethos” if you like. I make the distinction here between backpackers who travel in a variety of international settings from those who trek, hike or take wilderness trips and may carry tents and cooking gear..............................
