Detoxify with rithu charya this season | Deccan Chronicle

What is special about Karkidakam, especially for Keralites? Karkidakam is considered to be an inauspicious month and there would not be any marriage or function during this time. This month comes with a bundle of beliefs and rituals, most of which deal with the healthcare routine. Since it marks the final phase of monsoon, the body becomes weak as it gets ready for the change in the season.

According to ayurveda, the body is considered to be highly receptive to treatments during this time. So, to avoid the ill-effects of the changing season, lifestyle and diet need to be revised, and the body should be strengthened with a slew of therapies. Since the digestive and immunity systems weaken, most people stay away from smoking, drinking and sex to preserve the body’s energy. And they undergo various types of therapies to recharge body and mind.

Ayurveda practitioners advise rithu charya — the observance of specific diet and lifestyle to suit the season. Many herbs and medicinal plants are used to make special concoctions and are added to the daily diet. A rice porridge that is made with boiled cereals and 10-12 types of herbs and seeds is advised at least once a day. Oil massages and hot water baths are made part of the daily routine.
